On Friday, August 29th, 2025, Dr. Matthew Mitchell, a Vascular & Interventional Radiologist with Radiology Associates of North Texas, along with Dr. Richard Vigness, a cardiothoracic surgeon, successfully performed an advanced endovascular procedure to repair a life-threatening abdominal aneurysm.
An abdominal aortic aneurysm occurs when the wall of the large artery in the abdomen weakens and bulges outward. If untreated, it can rupture, causing life-threatening internal bleeding. Treating complex aneurysms in the past required traditional open surgery and/or sacrificing branch arteries. However, these devices allow physicians to safely treat aneurysms through small incisions that may have in past required open surgery.
The procedure was completed using two innovative devices:
- A fenestrated graft – a custom large stent with small openings for additional stents to keep blood flowing to important side arteries
- An iliac branch prosthesis – a branched stent that preserves blood flow to the pelvic arteries
We’re grateful for the life-saving work of Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Vigness, and we’re proud to provide patients in Texas with access to advanced, life-saving treatments.
