UNDERSTANDING YOUR BILLWhy Did I Get Two Bills?
Rest assured, you are not being double-billed. It is common to receive two separate bills when you have a diagnostic imaging test. When you undergo a medical imaging exam, the billing is divided into two components:
TECHNICAL PORTION
The first bill comes from the hospital or medical center where your test was performed, covering the facility’s costs, imaging equipment, technical staff, and any used medical supplies. This is known as the “technical” portion of the exam.
PROFESSIONAL PORTION
The second bill comes from the radiologists, like Radiology Associates of North Texas, covering their services, including interpreting the imaging exam, reporting findings to your physician, and offering diagnostic advice. This is called the “professional” portion of the exam.
Billing can vary based on the arrangement between your imaging facility and the radiologist. Some facilities may issue a single bill that includes both technical and professional charges, reflecting the combined costs. For details on your specific billing process, please contact your imaging facility.
PRICE TRANSPARENCY Good Faith Estimate
All medical imaging prices are not created equal. When choosing your imaging provider, it’s important to know that there can be significant differences in cost, depending on where your exam is performed.
According to the No Surprise Billing Act, patients have the right to request and receive a Good Faith Estimate on services scheduled to be performed. At Radiology Associates of North Texas, we have always strived for billing transparency which is why we offer price estimates to all our patients.
Understanding Your Health Insurance
Navigating health insurance can be challenging due to complex jargon. A recent survey by the Commonwealth Fund found that many insured Americans struggle with health insurance costs and understanding their coverage.*
However, once you learn the correct definitions of these and other common terms, as well as the basics of health insurance, you’ll feel much more confident knowing what’s covered and how much you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket. You’ll never be surprised by a bill and will have the confidence to dispute a charge that is not correct. Here are the most important terms and concepts to know:
PREMIUM
The amount you pay monthly or annually to your insurance company for health coverage.
DEDUCTIBLE
The amount you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance begins to cover healthcare expenses.
CO-PAY
A fixed fee you pay for specific medical services.
COINSURANCE
The percentage of costs you pay after reaching your deductible for the year.
Allowable vs. Billed
Charges
An allowable charge is the agreed-upon price between your insurance company and your provider for specific services. The billed charge is the total cost for the service as billed by your provider.
Pre-existing Condition
Any illness or chronic health issue present when you apply for health insurance.
Out-of-pocket Maximum
The maximum amount you’ll pay for your medical expenses in a year.
Pre-authorization
Approval from your insurance company is required before undergoing certain tests or procedures.
In-network vs. Out-of-
network Providers
In-network providers have pre-negotiated rates with your insurance company, often resulting in lower costs for services. Out-of-network providers do not have such agreements, but their services may still be covered partially or fully by your insurance.
Continuation of
Coverage
Many employer-sponsored plans allow you to temporarily continue your coverage at your own cost. If you lose your job, you can also shop for individual or family coverage through the health insurance marketplace during a special enrollment period.
